homePlease use your cursor keys to scroll right                                                     Last year I was involved in a grant by the Attleboro Interfaith Collaborative. The idea was that I would paint a series of portraits of clients and volunteers at their food bank. The project was scrubbed because of COVID (actually the grantor graciously donated the money we would have received back to the Collaborative). We briefly picked up the project in August of this year for an upcoming conference.

After the previous two weeks of painting, it became apparent that no one was really interested in sitting for a long pose, so I brought drawing materials instead. I did six drawings this day, two the next.

Lloyd was very friendly, grossly profane (to the severe disapproval of Brenda), and, by his own account, quite inebriated. I had brought a roll of toilet paper with me to do wipeouts. As I was packing to go, he suddenly asked, "Can I have that?" and so he left with a free roll of toilet paper..

Lloyd's brother. Walter runs the VFW chapter and was full of stories about Attleboro in the old days, various Important People he'd met, the intricacies of running herd on the various street people who showed up every day for a free meal, and his vocation as barber to the homeless. A sweet old man. Brenda is another church volunteer. She sat down next to Lloyd to sit and he swore a blue streak the whole time She reprimanded him severely every time he did. Meaghan was a volunteer. She actually lives right across the street from the VFW hall. She looks very young (I may not have captured that), but is 31. Meaghan's 13-year-old son. Matthew was extremely quiet and very cooperative. When I told him I would return the drawing to him after the conference, he told me to keep it.

Jimmy was a little reluctant to pose. I told him I could do it in five minutes, and he didn't believe me, so we timed it.

I did it in four.

It was very important to him that I get the "I Love Jesus" text onto his hat. When I told him I needed him to sign a release, he insisted on doing it first. He painstakingly signed his name, pressing down so hard it imprinted on the paper; you can see it on his upper lip.

          

 

                    

 
Jeremy immediately said yes when I asked if anyone was interested in posing. He smoked the cigarette behind his ear and I had to buy a butt off one of the other homeless clients for a dollar. Why is it that the people whip can least afford to smoke cigarettes are the ones still doing it? Lee is one of the volunteers.
